Recently, I met up with a friend of mine who had some credit card problems. It was also to my understanding that the problem had started recently perhaps 2 years back and he had made arrangements to pay for them. This he did and managed the repayments with minor misses. But, in the course of his repayments his salary was garnished forming a large percentage. In response I further thought;

Can a salary be garnished from a debtor who has a joint account?
How does the garnishment work? E.g. Creditor issues a warrant which enables the creditor to collect the amount directly from the debtors employer OR from the debtors bank once amount has been credited into it by the employer. .

Understanding the Social Workers Viewpoint

At times certain people tend to abuse welfare systems offered by organisations in Singapore. In the course of my experience, I did come across several cheeky individuals who utilise financial help for other leisurely sometimes un recommended habits. The question is, can the social worker detect and qualify the individual? Can one discern between a genuine and a false individual accurately?

Below are some instances to boot;

A) Alcoholics

B) Freeloaders

C) Drug Addicts

Friend to Fate Leveraging - Ending the vicious cycle

I met a guy who was down and out for 6 months or so. Fortunately, I bumped into him on an occasional basis and sometimes would share stories and insights into things. The last time I saw him he seemed no more destitute and morose than the average man. I asked him about himself and he verified my opinion. I asked how did he make it out? He mentioned that he was from a white collar background and while he was broke he could not get a job, much more one on a daily pay basis. He however had a friend who was in a simmilar position then, except that he fomerly was a painter prior to his fall.

1. What the guy did was to actually ask for a job on behalf of his friend concurrently when he called in for other daily paying jobs. Eventually, he did not get his but his friend got a break as a painter on a daily paid basis.

2. He made an arrangement with his friend that if he refered this job to him his friend had to support him while he searched and worked for a monthly paying one. This was for two months.

3. His friend agreed and after 2 weeks of going for interviews the guy I knew got a job as a customer service officer in a recognised MNC. He carried on working while his friend took care of all expenses like food, transport, etc...

4. At the end of the 2nd month of work, he paid his dues to his friend and was finally independent.

In sumarry, I do think this is quite a smart approach however the results are quite subjective but then again what is not ? Maybe the complexity could be more. But what are the chances of a friend agreeing to do something like that? 1 in 20, I think.

If you or anyonelse had received any financial aid from the 3 options i had given you the idea is to follow through and generate a consisitent income by working. If you/anyone else had not recieve any help you still have to generate income. I have listed a couple of Daily Paying Options or Jobs to keep you afloat. These may be less glamorous that whatever you did before but ever heard the phrase "Fortune Favours the Bold"? There are three very important things that a person who is destitute has to do once he/she has had managed to obtain some money. These things should be done in a close knitted manner, they are in order of logic;

1) With the money he/she should not waste anymore time and get a daily paying job or whatever that suits him. Go to http://theromanticdragon.blogspot.com/p/social.html for a peek.

The tricky part is to do all of them in a day or two, preferably. It goes something like this; Receive financial help in the morning, start calling daily paying jobs immediately and go for interview later that day.

Depending on whether he/she secures a job and starts work would he/she then be able to spend a little on accomodations. This is even trickier but I'll share a method with you that has worked for some and helps in narrowing down a job;

When you have already spoken to the "interviewer" ( Ask for that person!) over the phone ask the questions below;

A) Tell them that "you" are free this afternoon and ask whether they can interview you? If they say yes, proceed to B) if not, ask them when can they see you and proceed to B)

B) Whether that person can make up his or her mind straight after the face to face interview? If they say "yes" to B) ask them "is the vacancy urgent ?" If "no", why? Tell them you had rather not see them if that's the case because it is a waste of the little money you have. See what they say, if they agree with you drop this employer and go to the next potential vacancy.

If they say "just come down" ask them again if they can make up their mind about hiring on the spot. Also in the same note verify if they "pay daily", if not then he/she has the option not to take up the job at all. Take a decision If still no luck with a job the person has to make up his or her mind if he/she wants to check into a hostel /dormitory ( While looking for a job) or remain put. But if you do get a job, immediately check into one and start working. Concurrent to work the individual should find out more about medical welfare assistance if needed.

Conveniently, many people tend to say "Get a job, Get a job!" if you ask them for financial help, especially. Worst of all you may come away with nothing more than a lecture. Lets face it, asking makes the situation worse, not an inch better.

In reality, tell me something I've not heard? Whats so hard about getting a job when your're broke? I'll lay down the cards for you. With whatever little amounts you have. You need to buy the papers, pay the telecommunications service provider and go for the interview, right? How much do you think that will cost, conservatively?

1st day's effort = Papers (SGD$0.80 +/-) + Top up (SGD$8.00 +/-) + Bus Fare (SGD$3.60) + Food and Drink (+/-SGD$6.00) = SGD$18.40

For subsequent days efforts, I'll minus the mobile top up amount = SGD$18.40 - SGD$8.00 = SGD$10.40.

Given your current situation, you have SGD$20.00 in hand, you borrowed from someone before. Having calculated the above would you really spend your cash on one and a half days worth of jobhunting? I guess many would not as results are not guaranteed. Then what? How will you eat or drink and in short maintain your fundamental human needs? Many would give priority to that then taking a risk by looking for a job.

Then comes the second and the most annoying plight that is finding the funds for work if you manage to secure a job with that initial $20. You're looking at an estimated 26 days of work which will cost you approximately; SGD$10.00 per day spenditure x 26 = SGD$260. If you start working there's no way you can survive by $5 a day handouts, and not many will borrow you cash in a lump sum, moreso it may not be enough. What makes sense is to obtain the SGD$260 at one go. Agreed?

Employers won't really be please to let you have time off during office hours to go to CDC. Evidently, there was one such case where the person got the sack due to fund sourcing and had to start square one again by looking for another job and living off handouts again! What a bummer! Like something out of a "Twillight Zone" movie. Well you'd think if he or she was to go to the Company and ask for a loan the whole solution would be solved. Well, tell me which company confirms cash in advance and I'll buy you dinner. Considering these potential fiascos it means taking a bigger gamble than what you did at the start, which is to look for a job with SGD$20 in hand. When you lose, you lose bigger this time.. you bet you will !

Firstly, putting myself into ones shoes I can definitely imagine the panic attack, making the famous adage "no money no honey" an understatement. Right, lets get some money into the pocket. Before I go along let me idemnify myself stating that there are no guarantees in the advice rendered here. It may work for some and not for others, but I'll give it my best shot.

Remember this help is only for those that really need it. If you already have a job or some other means of income I suggest you drop this idea now! The help rendered here is only for those in crises.

1) As soon as you can, contact these three Moral Help Organisations namely A) http://www.catholicwelfare.org.sg/ Call and ask for any case/social worker. State your case, remember help won't just drop from the heavens, therefore gather the facts leading to the current situation. More importantly they should see the logic in the nature of your request. By that I mean for obvious reasons you should not go there if your trying to feed bad habits like excesive drinking, drugs, an abusive husband, wife etc. Ask to speak to the social worker in charge, after listening to your problem on the phone the person would be able to make a decision on whether an appointment is worthwhile. Support docummentation would help, so don't forget to bring them if any. E.g. Medical report, Letters to and from M.P. regarding homeless situation. The person in charge will ask you regarding the nature of the problem, very importantly explain to her why the money is needed, for instance where is it going to? Transport, Food or Rent costs.

2) Simmilar to the above procedure do the same with http://www.filos.sg/ContactUs.html situated at Upper East Coast or (Touch Community Services) http://www.tcs.org.sg/service/st_commsvcsintl/01.php.( For Touch instead of going to the main building go to Blk 162 Bukit Merah Central, #05 - 3555. The contact number is 63179931). According to some people, heading there straight away without calling would be the best thing however if you think that you can communicate your problems over the phone in hopes for an interview please do so. . Don't waste time on the wrong person. Tell them that you need to talk to someone about the crisis you are having. Chances are they will put you though immediately. If reception persists by questioning, ask them directly if they are in charge of this, if not then who is? as it is personal. If I am not mistaken for "Touch" there is only one case worker there, so it should not be too hard to get to "him".

Remember, the cash that you may recieve could be minimal. The idea is just so that it may tie you over for a few days while you work out a job, which we will address later. Again please bring along some form of support documentation as mentioned earlier, if any. This may increase the amount allotted to you. Judging by the two organisations listed above I'd say the chances are high that you will receive help immediately as it has been proven unless;

DON"TS

A) Go in pairs instead of alone

B) Mumble and/or burp alcohol or cough smoke while you talk.

C) Sounding very relax and unserious, even worse Laugh and joking with staff or on a mobile phone.

D) Present your problems in an illogical, no sense manner E.g. Case Worker: Are you interested in working now? I can possibly get you a job tommorow as you are in desperate need to get your life back. You: Depends, I don't like working as a waiter, cleaner etc....................... Must have salary of SGD$8/per hour if not then... you know. Despite yourself not having the finances to work, the above is definite suicide.

Ever been in a situation where unemployment has got the better of you ? Finding yourself dazed, confused and going homeless? Slipping from whatever savings you have left till your ATM card bounces ? Speaking from experience, the information here could save you a lot of misery. I'll try my best to identify the best steps to take for the tedious upward climb to normality or better. I won't really tell you why or how I ended up the way I did but instead offer solutions that may be practical for survival. With this blog I intend to update you on the latest support information that may help that particular person in need.

Basically, there's nothing much immediate that can happen if you intend to solve such a crises by the book. Typically, after speaking to numerous people who suffered, the only sort of help they really needed was urgent "over the counter help", there and then. Hey, shouldn't that be true? Why else would one seek such financial aid unless they'd be dead broke. Some examples stem from the need to

A. Prolong whatever monies they may have left until such time they procured a job and received a salary, which I think would not be all that wrong.

B. Immediate need of Food, Shelter and Lodging.

C. In some cases, expenditures for work transport, food and the truth be told maybe even some entertainment e.g. Tea in the coffeeshop while watching a soccer match.

For those foreign to crisis such as these must really know that money and time are really very relative to sufferers. With the little handouts from friends or whosoever they not only have to be frugal but also anticipate the next inflow of cash, if any...

Jokes aside, one can really feel the low asphalt of the ground and the high heat of the sun beating on the brow, plus occasional hunger pangs...when you're broke, homeless and hungry. Most times people who end up caught on the long haul may even have their famillies deserting them. For whatever reason that may be the cause of them being what they are now; Should that one mistake then, be that final nail in the coffin ? Well take a minute and ponder .......

Anyway, this site tries not to judge but to provide solutions for the many hungry, destitute, lost and hopeless individuals. *However, the advice here would work best if the seeker would really be interested in getting his or her life back together. Let's start at the best part, which is of course to "breathe".
"Revenue generation" or plainly how to get cash (Where to go, Who to talk to and What to say) into your pocket and then work our way upwards till you break surface, which is procuring a more suitable job.

Within revenue generation another topic that would be covered is temporary or urgent housing, where to go and how to negotiate payment.
"Friend to fate" leveraging which utilises friendship to pull you out of this mess faster.
